OTHER PUBLIC PLACES TO PLAY

We know of these other places to play, but we do not manage schedules or oversee any of their activities.

Clatsop Community College. Patriot Hall welcomes pickleball players. www.clatsopcc.edu/patriothall/classes-and-activities/#opencourt

Fred Lindstrom Park (aka: Peter Pan Park) at 6th & Niagara in Astoria. The Astoria Parks and Recreation Department has paved the tennis courts and converted them to pickleball courts. There are floodlights for evening play. Consult the Playtime Scheduler app if you want to play with others.

Astoria Middle School Gymnasium. Consult PlayTimeScheduler app to see when the gym is open for pickleball.

Seaside.  For details contact sunsetempire.com,  503-738-3311.  Play pickleball in the Sunset Empire Recreation District’s Gymnasium (Broadway and Hwy 101)

Gearhart. Two courts are open for anyone to come and play. The courts are on the corner of Pacific Way and S. Marion Avenue. (Balls for outdoor play are harder and heavier than those used for indoor play.)

Long Beach, WA. Lighthouse Oceanfront Resort, 12417 Pacific Way, Long Beach, Washington 98631. Call 360-642-3622 for information. They welcome the public.

Nehalem Bay Pickleball and North Coast Recreation District invite you to play on their outdoor 4-court facility in Nehalem. Location: 7th Street just off Hwy 101 in Nehalem. The Nehalem players go two ways: one forms their own group emails, and the other one is to go on PlayTime Scheduler. Anyone can create a session (a game) and this is a good way to join others. You need to click on Tillamook County, OR.

Figuring Out the Score

This is a great explanation of scoring and how you can be certain what the score is depending on where you were standing when the game began. Article on Pickleball Guru website

“Pickleball FYI” is an app with all the rules and more!

My name is Dave Schwan. I’ve built a pickleball app, and I’m very excited to share that it’s available for both Android and iPhone! The app has searchable rules, frequently asked questions, etiquette, and drills. And best of all, it’s completely FREE! If you have a moment to check it out, share it with your club, and provide any feedback, suggestions…  I’d GREATLY appreciate it!

Sincerely, Dave Schwan

The 1 Unexpected Health Benefit Of Playing Pickleball

Link to Huffington Post

Pickleball injuries in older adults

From AARP Bulletin: More than 60% of injuries sustained by pickleball players 60 and older resulted from slips, trips, falls or dives, according to our recent study of people who went to U.S. emergency departments. Wrist fractures are more common among women, while men are more likely to develop strains and sprains.

To lower your risk, wear shoes that support lateral motion, like those for tennis–not running shoes designed for forward motion. A lesson can help you learn the correct technique, and you might want to wear a wrist brace. To prevent strains and sprains, warm up for five or 10 minutes before playing. Loosen up your large lower-body muscles and shoulders.

–Charles DiMaggio, director of injury research, NYU Langone Health, and coauthor of a study on pickleball injuries
